2016 Reading Challenges

One of my favorite parts of starting a new year is getting to start a new year of reading. While last year was a poor reading year due to an almost 6 month long reading slump, I'm back to reading and wanting to challenge myself to those challenges I failed last year and a few more that I've found. My biggest reading challenge for 2016 is to read what I want. I feel like I pressure myself to read this or that and I'm such a mood reader that it turns me away from reading. BUT I find it incredibly fun and sometimes very motivating to challenge myself. So here are the few challenges that I'm going to be holding myself to in 2016.

The Challenge: To read a series a month, of at least two books.

I challenged myself to this last year and failed every month. There are so many series out there I want to read and this is a great motivator to get to them finally. Some series that I'm considering:
The Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce
The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
His Fair Assassin trilogy by Robin LaFevers
The Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima

The Challenge: To read at least one book a month off your own shelf. (At least 12 for the year).

This challenge is one I've been looking for. I have quite a few unread books on my shelf and I want to read each and every one of them, I just often get distracted away from them or end up reading library books instead. I really would like to challenge myself to read more off my shelf and this is the perfect way to do it! I'm keeping this one completely open as to a tbr list, but look for what I read in my monthly wrap ups.

The Challenge: Set the number of fantasy books that you want to read for the year. I'm challenging myself to read 30 fantasy books in 2016.

This is another challenge I did last year, but utterly failed at. Fantasy is my favorite genre so I can't resist joining in and keeping track of the fantasy I read this year.

The Challenge: Read a number of books you set that qualify as backlist titles. The qualification is to be published in or before 2014. I'm challenging myself to read 20 backlist books in 2016.

I've been wanting to pay more attention to backlist books and discover new reads to promote. I'm really looking forward to finding some new favorites this way!

What Reading Challenges are you participating in for 2016?

  1. I'm excited for all of the series you picked for the first challenge. I really hope you get to them! Good luck with all your challenges. :D

I'm doing Crini's Around the World Challenge (it's going to be fun, you should look into it!) and a modified Pop Sugar challenge. I won't go out of my way to read anything I really don't want to, though, haha.

  2. Ah, me too! I really want to read them, so I really hope I get to them. Thank you for the luck, I think I might need it. Though having a bad reading this year might mean a good reading year next year? ;) And keeping the pressure low I hope will help me too.

Oh! That does sound fun! I will have to check it out! Yes I agree. I'm not going to read anything I really don't want to either, it ruins the fun that way!

Here's to us both having great a great reading year in 2016! :D

    1. Yes! Absolutely, I think you will have a great reading year. :D (We should try to do a buddy read, we never made it this year, haha.)

Here's the Around the World challenge: http://itsallaboutbooks.de/2015/12/challenge-around-the-world-2016/ I love all of her spreadsheets, they're amazing. I bet if you started her Books of 2016 one, you'd find yourself reading more, just because it's so addictive. :P
