Outside the (Book) Box Review

I have been thinking about doing this feature and I hope you all will like it. I have been wanting to review the other genres that I read that are not YA. I thought about doing this feature bi-weekly feature on the blog. This week I am happy to be reviewing I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella.

Title: I've Got Your Number
Author: Sophie Kinsella
Publication: February 14th, 2012
Publisher: The Dial Press
Source: Borrowed from the library

Rating: 5 out 5 stars

Synopsis: I've lost it. :( The only thing in the world I wasn't supposed to lose. My engagement ring. It's been in Magnus's family for three generations. And now the very same day his parents are coming, I've lost it. The very same day! Do not hyperventilate, Poppy. Stay positive :) !!

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her "happily ever after" begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that the phone's owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn't agree. He wants his phone back and doesn't appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other's lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents...she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

Review: I am a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella's writing and those stories that fly out of her fingers. This is no exception. After finding a phone in the trash can, Poppy picks it up and starts to use it. I couldn't help but wonder who in the world would do this?! But the desperation of Poppy's situation could leave you to using a discarded cell phone. When she finds that the cell phone is a company phone she offers to be the temporary assistant by forwarding emails and texts to her "boss", Sam. Through these messages, Poppy and Sam start to develop a relationship while Poppy is busy planning for her wedding and trying to impress her future in-laws.

I loved the modern plot of this story revolving around cell phones with email and the texting that goes back and forth between Poppy and Sam. I love Poppy and her crazy antics. She's funny, witty and kind-hearted, just the kind of girl that you are rooting for to have a happy ending and wanting to be your best friend. Sam is hard-up but kind and caring on the inside that you are hoping will find just the right person to soften him up. I loved Poppy and Sam together, they were the perfect opposite combination that brought out the best in each other.

This book is one of those page turners in the sense that you can't turn the pages fast enough. This story was highly entertaining that has you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. The plot twists and situations that Poppy gets herself into had me cringing and laughing (out loud!) at the same time. This book is tied with Can You Keep a Secret? for my favorite Sophie Kinsella novel. I highly recommend this book!

Any books you've read lately that have been outside your (book) box? Do you like/dislike books that have modern technology as a crucial part of the relationship development?

Glad to see another person who loved this book! I'm a big fan of Sophie Kinsella as well and I really liked the light and funny tone of this one. Poppy and Sam are perfect for each other and I actually cried when the wedding guests were reading aloud Sam's text. So sweet!

Hmmm...I recently read Inquest by Kevis Hendrickson. It's a space opera/sci-fi YA and these genres are usually not ones I would read. I really liked it though!

  2. Yes! I loved every part of this book. That text made me "awwww" out loud!

The genre of that book sounds really interesting, I think I might have to check it out. It's always a nice surprise when you end up liking a book you thought you wouldn't enjoy as much as you actually did.
